Course Description: This course provides an overview of the current issues of older adults and their families and as they relate to psychotherapists working with this population. The material examines the bio-psycho social and economic impact of aging as well as changing family trends as they impact rapidly aging population. The content will review issues, obstacles and therapeutic accommodations as they specifically relate to interventions with the older client and their adult children. Reporting laws and legal requirements on elder abuse for mandated professionals will be reviewed. A multi-disciplinary approach to treating older adults and their family will be presented.

Course Goals & Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will:

  1. Be able to identify physical, social and economic factors which impact older adults in the current environment
  2. State how the changing roles of women impact current Caregiving realities.
  3. Understand the normal physical and cognitive changes associated with aging.
  4. Recognize the cognitive symptoms that are associated with dementia.
  5. Identify at least five therapeutic issues that are commonly presented when working with issues of older adults.
  6. Be able to explain the value of various therapeutic approaches for older clientele.
  7. Understand the various modifications necessary when working with an older population.
  8. Be able to discuss personal issues that may come up when work with older adults and their families
  9. Be able to identify the different situations that a mandated reporter must report suspected elder abuse and optional reporting situations.
  10. Identify the multi-disciplinary team which is available to assist in serving older adults and families.
  11. Identify community resources available to older adults and family caregivers.
